Gilbert Kimani

Gilbert Kimani - CPA, CA, BBA (Hons)

Tutorial Subjects: Mathematics, Calculus, English, Business Courses

Hobbies: Watching & playing the beautiful game, story telling, ping pong, 10k runs

I began my education under the 8-4-4 system in Kenya. After completing my 8 years of primary education at Kilimani Junior Academy, I joined Starehe Boys Centre & School for my 4 years of high school from where I got an opportunity to travel to Vancouver, Canada on a GAP year at Collingwood School.

At Collingwood School, I began tutoring and coaching students in mathematics. I discovered I had a knack for bringing the best out of my students in mathematics especially by building their confidence. I was accepted into Simon Fraser University to pursue an Accounting degree and built my tutoring business in my early college years. This allowed me to continue with my passion of bringing success to my students. Even after graduating and receiving my Chartered Accountant designation in British Columbia, Canada I continued tutoring from the great fulfillment it brought to my students and myself.

I believe in creating a meaningful connection with my students and being interested in their academic pursuits and general well-being. Success in mathematics and the ideal study habits fall into place once the relationship is established.

I have had the priviledge of sharing the success of many students and look forward to sharing in yours as well.

Caroline Ssemanda

Tutorial Subjects: Mathematics K – 4, Reading & Writing

Hobbies: Reading, playing basketball, spending time with family and friends

Growing up within a household of teachers in Hamilton, Ontario, I have always been immersed in education for as long as I can remember. I attended McMaster University in Ontario for my undergrad and graduated with an Honours in Humanities. Afterwards I pursued a career in teaching by attending Teacher’s College at York University in Toronto, which was spurred on by the calling that my family undoubtedly had toward the profession.

Teaching and coaching has always been a passion of mine as I grew with sport and education as main staples in my life. I have been a student athlete throughout my educational career as I played rep basketball, Varsity Basketball and Varsity Track and Field at my University. As a result, I know how to effectively manage my time and achieve success on what I set my mind to focus on; a skill I am keen on sharing with my students. From being an athlete to a coach to now a teacher, I have been able to put myself in the position of the student and can understand how learning can be informative while also being interesting and imaginative in its delivery.

After teaching in Ontario for 5 years, an opportunity to move to British Columbia and teach a Grade 2 class in North Vancouver presented itself and I leaped at the opportunity. Having previously visited Vancouver and enduring a challenging year, I wanted to continue to push myself out of my comfort zone and foster personal growth. Upon arriving at my new school, I grasped the new curriculum and enjoyed it’s focus on inquiry-based learning. I am a lifelong learner and I appreciate any opportunity to learn more from colleagues and students alike.

I only hope to share my focus, experience and the best of my teaching abilities in tutoring future students.

Makena Lal

Tutorial Subjects: Mathematics, Sciences, English

Hobbies: Travelling, swimming, hiking, and baking

I grew up on the North Shore graduating with honours from Handsworth in 2019. I’ve always been academically inclined and enjoyed excelling in academics throughout school while working as a lifeguard/swimming instructor at Delbrook Rec Center.

I decided to take a gap year after graduating from high school, differing my acceptance to UBC Faculty of Sciences for a year, so that I could learn more about myself and the world.

I have recently spent time volunteering in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal. I am TEFL certified, and have had the opportunity to live in a monastery and teach young monks English in a classroom setting. I found this experience to be extremely rewarding and it has made me see a true passion for teaching. I have come back to work for a few months before heading out to travel some more throughout the rest of the year.
